Contraception

  • Care include physical examination, provision of contraceptive methods that include condom distribution, oral, injectable and subdermal methods of contraception.
  • Pap smears (3 Free pap smears for life; aged 30, 40 and 50 years of age)
  • Emergency contraceptives (“morning after pill”) within 5 days of incident
  • Management or referral of side effects of contraceptives methods
  • Health education regarding adherence, side effects, and much more.
  • Distribution of Male and Female condoms

                                                           

 

Pregnancy Testing

  • If pregnancy test negative: discuss condoms, contraceptive methods, choices and much more
  • If pregnancy test positive: HIV test, and referral to Antenatal care or alternate options available.
 

Antenatal, Perinatal and Post-natal care (Referred to Ante-natal clinics for care and support)

 

Termination of Pregnancies (Referred for Care)

  • Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1996 allows legal abortions to be done at specified hospitals/day hospitals/private facilities. In the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area, these are the Dora Nginza Hospital, Motherwell Health Care Centre, Uitenhage Provincial Hospital, and Mary Stopes. 
  • Please note: Backstreet abortions are illegal and detrimental to your health. 
  • The Nelson Mandela University Student Health Services diagnose pregnancy; do an HIV test, and advice regarding alternate choices.
